Gerrard Commits To Liverpool

CL: Steven Gerrard, Liverpool v Real Madrid (PA)

Liverpool midfielder Steven Gerrard has high hopes of lifting the Premier League trophy with the club he hopes to end his career with.

The England international feels that the easiest thing would be to move clubs, but has stated this is not what he wants, as he believes winning titles and competitions with the Reds would be more special than winning them with another club.

The 28-year-old has already turned down a move to Chelsea in his career, at a time when his Liverpool future was in doubt, and the Blues reportedly offered a mammoth £32 million for his services.

Speaking to
Sky Sports, Gerrard said, "When I see John Terry, Gary Neville and Rio Ferdinand lifting that trophy, I want to do that, but I want to do that for Liverpool football club.

"I think the easy thing would be maybe to move on, but it's not for me. What would be more important for me would be to win it and share it with the club and with my family who are all Liverpool fans.

"That would mean more to me than winning it maybe five or six times somewhere else."

Liverpool's 4-1 win against bitter rivals Manchester United last week did leave the title race a little more open, with the Reds now four points behind United. But United have a game in hand, and Gerrard feels the Reds' form was not good enough when United were away at the Club World Cup in Japan.

"We were out there and we were flying. But you always knew Manchester United were going to come back with their schedule and eventually they did and we've slipped up and lost points where we shouldn't.

"It's even more frustrating now, because you're saying 'what if...what if', but the important thing now is to look forward and to try and win the remaining games and hopefully other teams can do us a few favours."

The Liverpool captain also feels the news that manager Rafael Benitez has signed a new contract with the club will benefit them hugely, and feels that the Spaniard is the man who can take the club forward.

"Liverpool is not really known for all this sort of thing in the media and in-house fighting, so it's nice to have all of that put to bed and Rafa's dedicated five years to the club heloves and we can all move on.

"Hopefully, the next five years can be successful because the main thing at this club is winning trophies."

The England international has been at the club since his promotion from the youth squad in 1998, and the 28-year-old has gone on to make 327 Premier league appearances for the club, scoring a total of 65 goals in the process.
