Fernando Torres Targets Liverpool Goal Record

EPL: Fernando Torres, Manchester United - Liverpool (PA)

Liverpool striker Fernando Torres has set a target to beat a goal scoring record that has stood for 103 years, by becoming the first Reds player since Jack Parkinson in 1906 to score 35 goals in 50 league games if he scores twice against Aston Villa on Sunday.

The Spain international was one of the scorers against Manchester United last weekend in the massive 4-1 win at Old Trafford, which let to the title race being back on for the Reds.

Manager Rafael Benitez has praised his striker and captain Steven Gerrard for their contribution to the Reds' season so far.

Speaking to
Football365.com, Benitez said, "People talk about them as two strikers these days. How many will they score? Certainly more goals than anyone else we have.

"They are fantastic players, very important for us, so for us to see Torres and Gerrard maybe scoring 20 goals each every season would be a massive boost.

"We need them and we know the team is better when they play together."

The pair scored an astonishing 54 goals between them last season, but that has nearly halved this year to 29, with both players suffering injuries this term.

However, despite the slow stop start season, Torres has endured says he is now relishing the rest of the season and hopes to bag more important goals for the Reds.

"People seem to be marking me tighter and getting closer to me than last season, but that is only normal.

"After last season, they are more aware of me and how I like to play. They know how me, and Steven, like to play, passing the ball between us.

"Unfortunately, we have not been able to play together as much as we would have liked this season because of injury. But when we do, it is up to us to adapt to overcome whatever is put in front of us.

"We have had a lot of league draws this season, too many at home, but in general the opposition's approach to us seems to be different to last season.

"We have been up near the top of the table for a long time, so a draw against Liverpool is like a victory for some teams.

"That is why it has sometimes been difficult for us to play well at home. Teams just come to Anfield to defend, we know this and we have to improve at home when teams play like this against us.

"We have drawn six home league games, which is not normal for a team in our position in the league, but that is the nature of the Premier League."

Liverpool boss Benitez now feels that thanks to their 4-1 triumph over bitter rivals United, the club are now back in the title race.

"I know how much winning at Manchester United means to our fans. You only had to be on the motorway coming home with them last weekend to realise that.

"But we must put that result behind us now and concentrate on winning against Villa.

"We are four points behind Manchester United and they have a game in hand, so only by winning every game we have left can we have a say in the title race."

Liverpool currently sit in third place going into the crunch match against Villa on Sunday, hoping to make up even more ground on United.

Gerrard Commits To Liverpool

CL: Steven Gerrard, Liverpool v Real Madrid (PA)

Liverpool midfielder Steven Gerrard has high hopes of lifting the Premier League trophy with the club he hopes to end his career with.

The England international feels that the easiest thing would be to move clubs, but has stated this is not what he wants, as he believes winning titles and competitions with the Reds would be more special than winning them with another club.

The 28-year-old has already turned down a move to Chelsea in his career, at a time when his Liverpool future was in doubt, and the Blues reportedly offered a mammoth £32 million for his services.

Speaking to
Sky Sports, Gerrard said, "When I see John Terry, Gary Neville and Rio Ferdinand lifting that trophy, I want to do that, but I want to do that for Liverpool football club.

"I think the easy thing would be maybe to move on, but it's not for me. What would be more important for me would be to win it and share it with the club and with my family who are all Liverpool fans.

"That would mean more to me than winning it maybe five or six times somewhere else."

Liverpool's 4-1 win against bitter rivals Manchester United last week did leave the title race a little more open, with the Reds now four points behind United. But United have a game in hand, and Gerrard feels the Reds' form was not good enough when United were away at the Club World Cup in Japan.

"We were out there and we were flying. But you always knew Manchester United were going to come back with their schedule and eventually they did and we've slipped up and lost points where we shouldn't.

"It's even more frustrating now, because you're saying 'what if...what if', but the important thing now is to look forward and to try and win the remaining games and hopefully other teams can do us a few favours."

The Liverpool captain also feels the news that manager Rafael Benitez has signed a new contract with the club will benefit them hugely, and feels that the Spaniard is the man who can take the club forward.

"Liverpool is not really known for all this sort of thing in the media and in-house fighting, so it's nice to have all of that put to bed and Rafa's dedicated five years to the club heloves and we can all move on.

"Hopefully, the next five years can be successful because the main thing at this club is winning trophies."

The England international has been at the club since his promotion from the youth squad in 1998, and the 28-year-old has gone on to make 327 Premier league appearances for the club, scoring a total of 65 goals in the process.

Fulham Down Nine-Man Manchester United

We have a title race; Manchester United have lost consecutive league games to allow Liverpool and Chelsea a glimpse of the top of the table. Murphy and Gera netted the strikes to give Fulham the win over nine-man Man United...

EPL: Danny Murphy, Fulham - Newcastle United (PA)

Fulham had not won against United here since 1964, and against a frustrated rival, executed their gameplan to perfection to stop the rot. Home form, a boon earlier in the season, had begun to wobble of late but this result will augment the Cottagers' European hopes.

Fulham triumphed thanks to a Danny Murphy penalty and a goal on the break by Zoltan Gera with two minutes to play. Each goal brought a United dismissal; Paul Scholes was sent off prior to the Murphy penalty for handling, while Wayne Rooney blew his top in the wake of Gera's clincher.

There were off-days for Ronaldo, Berbatov and company, and despite battering Fulham for large swathes of the second half, Manchester United fell.

Not a good day at the
office for Sir Alex. It may be, for him at least, squeaky bum time.

First Half

Sir Alex Ferguson shuffled his deck, making some alterations to the side that lost to Liverpool last weekend; Dimitar Berbatov replaced Wayne Rooney in an attacking capacity for the visitors in one of their more noteworthy changes, but it was Ferguson stalwart who was to be the chief protagonist in the first period.

Fulham, for their part, named the same XI that won at Bolton Wanderers last week and started on the front foot. Clint Dempsey went close early on with a drive, before United had a decent chance of their own. Patrice Evra, booked for diving at the end of the half, crossed from the left but Berbatov couldn't direct his header on the target.

The hosts maintained control of the game, dictated the pace in the opening stages and made United uncomfortable on a ground on which they triumphed 4-0 only a fortnight ago.

Bobby Zamora had a clutch of first half chances, but couldn't convert. He sent the first of a few speculative drives wide on the quarter hour.

Fulham's early dominance was rewarded as soon as the 17th minute, when the Cottagers were given a penalty and Ferguson's side reduced to ten men.

Simon Davies fired in a corner, which was flicked on by Zamora. His effort prompted a hand ball on the line by Paul Scholes, who was shown the red card. Danny Murphy, not for the first time in his career, netted a penalty against the Red Devils.

The northern side failed to ruse themselves and were lucky not to be two-down on 20 minutes when van der Sar saved from Zamora.

Zamora was again repelled by the occupied Dutchman before Dempsey stuck narrowly wide on the half-hour, as United continued to be sub-par.

Dickson Etuhu, from a Dempsey cross, made van der Sar work again; Rio Ferdinand and Jonny Evans could not get to grips with their adversaries. Zamora, one of the more prominent first half performers, then unleashed a vicious strike, which was well-fielded by van der Sar.

The champions went in at half-time a shadow of their selves; their game was blighted by a lack of responsibility and a palpable crisis in confidence in possession.

Second Half

No doubt on the end of the hairdryer treatment at half-time, it was a vastly improved Manchester United that appeared after the break. Park Ji Sung fired narrowly over immediately, as the world champions attempted to gain parity.

United dictated the second half tempo, but with their new-found attacking instincts now functioning, there remained the danger of a counter attack.

Nonetheless, a Ronaldo header, from Darren Fletcher's cross served to remind the Londoners who they were dealing with. Just wide on that occasion.

A Zamora shot, from an unlikely angle alleviated the Fulham pressure and gave United a jitter before Rooney fed Ronaldo to shoot straight at Schwarzer on the hour.

Fletcher was next to try his luck, before a combination of Rooney and Ronaldo almost prized Hodgson's side open. The Scouser crossed from the right and Ronaldo, frustrated to the point of a booking, could only direct his header at
Australia's number 1.

The custodian had to be on full alert moments later, pulling off an incredible pair of saves to protect Fulham's clean sheet. Park fired from close range and was denied; Rooney's follow up was shut out by Schwarzer in stunning fashion.

The wave of pressure never let up; Ferdinand, as well as Ronaldo and Rooney had another chance apiece as the game ebbed towards the last 15 minutes.

However, that threat of a counter-attack ultimately outdid the Champions League holders. Pouring forward, Ferguson's side were caught by Andy Johnson running down the right. The Red Devils had scant cover when Johnson sent the cross over. Subsitute Zoltan Gera was well placed in the box to control and fire an overhead shot into the corner to sink United.

Wayne Rooney's temper then further agonised Sir Alex; throwing the ball away, the England forward was handed a second yellow card to reduce his side to nine men.

Benitez: Manchester United Are Favourites For Europe

The Reds boss believes that, considering this morning's UEFA Champions League draw, Manchester United are the favorites.

EPL: Rafael Benitez, Middlesbrough - Liverpool (PA)

The Spaniard also offered clarity over his new long-term Liverpool contract.

"It will be difficult for both sides," Benitez said at a press conference today. "We've played each other so many times, sometimes its advantageous, sometimes its not.

"Villarreal, and FC Porto are good sides, but to draw against a team like Chelsea is tough," he warned. "Clearly Manchester United are favourites."

Regarding the news that UEFA are set to acquiesce to Liverpool's request of moving a Champions League tie so that it will not lie on their 20th anniversary commemorations, Benitez added, "We were trying to avoid the Hillsborough date for what it means for the club and the fans, but we are pleased with the decision."

He also clarified the complexities over his new contract, "I think every press conference for the past three months I have answered a question about this. There were uncertainties to sort out, those were the key, we had to clarify these.

"I am pleased with the answer. I have the same control that I had before with regard to transfers," he said.

Benitez also refuted claims that he was after Aaron Lennon, "I can guarantee we are not talking this morning about any players. Just our next game against Aston Villa.

Rihanna’s mentor fears Oprah isn't helping

While Oprah Winfrey, Tyra Banks, and other talk-show hosts have discussed what Rihanna should do after the assault she allegedly suffered at the hands of boyfriend Chris Brown, Rihanna’s mentor, producer Evan Rogers, believes all the televised attention could make matters worse.

“I think that everyone has good intentions and means well, but it turns up the heat in terms of it seeming like the whole world is telling her what to do,” Rogers told Entertainment Weekly. “At the end of the day, people forget that, at 21, your perspective is very different. These kinds of things can happen to anyone, whether you're a celebrity or not.”

Still, the man who discovered the Barbadian singer knows she listens to all the unsolicited advice, even if she chooses not to take it.

“I think she's very aware of everything that's going on,” he explained. “Just like anyone else, she watches TV, she goes online. And I think that it matters to her, but there's a line that she walks between being human and caring when you hear these kinds of things, and separating your personal life from your professional life. She's doing the best she can and this is a very difficult time that she's going through right now and she's going to learn a lot from it.”

Despite Rogers' concerns, recent reports indicate Rihanna may be warming to the popular “leave Brown behind” sentiments. She and Brown are now said to be taking a break from their relationship.

Katy Perry Music Video Banned

The first music video was released in 2007 and surfaced onto YouTube in May 2008 but has since been removed from the site. The video includes multiple rooms, including a white room with Perry that suggests violence (e.g., red wine), a dark room with an unhappy Perry in an unsatisfactory relationship, and a cloudy location. The video uses a cross-cutting technique that compares the two relationships: one with Perry reminiscing and another showing regret. The video ends with the revelation that Perry literally stabbed a man in the back in the white room. Perry stated in an interview that the aim of the video was never to get a commercial release, but that it is just a simple video "made by a friend".

Carragher Delighted Benitez Has Committed To Liverpool

There is no surprise in Carra's delight that Rafa's going to stay the big boss for a long time to come.

The former England defender has flourished since Benitez first took over the reigns five years ago and is looking forward to another half a decade under the Spaniard's expert tutelage.

"Yeah, I am delighted my game has improved a lot since the manager come over the last four or five years and hopefully it will improve again, even though I am getting bit older, over the next four or five years," Carragher told Sky Sports News.

"We have won a couple of big trophies but we want to push on in terms of the [Premier League] over these next four or five years and hopefully before I have finished win that one and other trophies as well."

When pressed on whether the constant speculation over the gaffer's future had had a destabilizing effect on the players, Carragher responded, "No, not really. We all have our own issues at times. Even now there are different players probably not sure what they are going to do this season or next season, so that's just part of football.

"But I think it is always better when everything is sorted out and people know exactly what is happening.

"We all have our own issues, at different times, with contracts so we understand what the manager's been through, but hopefully it is sorted now and we can move on for the rest of the season and for future years."

Gerrard: Teams Fear Liverpool Now

The Reds skipper claims that potential opponents have far more to fear from his side than vice versa.

Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard is in confident mood ahead of the draw for the Champions League quarter-finals, claiming that the Merseysiders are now the team that everyone else would like to avoid.

The Reds certainly made the rest of the continent sit up and take notice of them when they destroyed Real Madrid 5-0 over two legs, including a 4-0 battering at Anfield, and Gerrard believes that Rafa Benitez's men now have a sharp psychological edge over everyone else in the tournament.

"We are not running scared of anybody, we will take who we get and believe that we are going to go through," the England international told Setanta Sports News.

"If you are asking me about a fear factor in the Champions League, then I think it is the other seven teams in the draw who are going to have concerns about coming up against us after that Real Madrid result.

"The way I look at it, we are going to have to play them sooner or later, so it does not matter if it is now, the semi-finals or the final."

Liverpool also destroyed domestic rivals Manchester United 4-1 at Old Trafford at the weekend, and that result has amply demonstrated that the Real result was no fluke, Gerrard believes, as it has shown the world of just what the club are capable of when 'pulling together'.

"We are now looking forward to the draw later this week," he added.

"If you could hand-pick an opponent then maybe we would want someone like Villarreal or Porto, but there are no easy draws at this stage.

"Everyone who has got to this stage of the competition has done well. They will all believe in themselves.

"But we have shown - the players, the manager and the fans - that we are a force to be reckoned with when we pull it all together. So we will sit down on Friday and see who we get and take it from there."

People..thanks for coming
